GROUP: Working Dog SIZE: Large ORIGIN: Mesopotamia
Traditionally a livestock guarding dog, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is greatly admired in his native Turkey. A rare and beautiful breed, the Anatolian has proved himself to be highly intelligent, naturally protective and loyal to his family, whether at home or on the farm. Known for their lion-like appearance, Anatolians are strong and brave and are used to protect sheep and goats in Australia.
ORIGIN
A shepherd's guard Dog of ancient lineage, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is believed to have descended from large hunting dogs In Mesopotamia. Its original home of Anatolia in Turkey, is characterised by extreme heat and cold, depending on the season. Anatolians developed a dense double coat to cope with the elements and often travel long distances while guarding flocks on the Central Anatolian Plateau. Their owners take pride in their size and bravery, stamina and speed, which enables them to chase and run down wolves.
GENERAL APPEARANCE
A powerfully built large dog, the Anatolian has a broad, strong head. The skull is large but in proportion to his body, is broad between the ears and slightly domed with a slight stop. Eyes are set well apart and deep and rather small in proportion to the body. The Anatolian has medium sized ears which are triangular in shape. He has a noticeable level line of body, head and neck when walking. This gives an impression of stalking, with great power. The Anatolian has a whole coloured coat, which may be any colour, including shades of fawn to cream, to red and sometimes brindle. The mask and ears are always dark.
SIZE
Mature dogs up to 81 cm and 65kg, bitches up to 79cm and 55kg.
TEMPERAMENT
The breed is naturally independent, yet loving and gentle. It is capable of being trained for almost anything but needs to feel appreciated and acknowledged for correct behaviour. This helps boosts a dog's confidence, particularly during early training.
Steady and bold, the Anatolian is not aggressive, but intelligent and tractable. He is fond of small children and displays protective behaviour towards them. Mature Anatolians can be wary of strangers.
CARE AND GROOMING
Regular grooming to remove dead hairs is recommended.
