Dog Breed Profiles - Breeds B

GROUP: Toy    SIZE: Small    ORIGIN: Spain

There are several bichon (French for lap dog) breeds but the most famous and the only type recognised in Australia, is the Bichon Frise. This lively little dog is the only bichon to have a double coat, giving it that distinctive fluffy appearance.

ORIGIN
Centuries ago the Bichon Frise was popular in Spain but how it got there nobody knows, for it has no Spanish blood. It is officially recognised as Franco-Belgian. Its popularity waned for some time until it was rediscovered by Spanish sailors in the 1300s. Two hundred years later the dog was enjoying royal patronage and in the late 1800s was a popular breed. They became the dog of choice for organ grinders and Circuses.

English and US servicemen fighting in France in World War I were entranced by the dog's soft fluffy coat and took them home after the war. The French Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1934 and named it Frise (curly coat). The American Kennel Control did not recognise it until 1971 and the first specimens arrived in Australia in 1976.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
This eye catching breed has a loosely curling coat that can be up to 10cm long. It forms a plume on the tail and is usually groomed to give the head a large, balloon-like appearance. The muzzle should not be thick or heavy, the eyes should be fairly round with dark rims and the ears should hang close to the head. The neck is fairly long and carried proudly, the chest is well developed and the ribs should be well-rounded.

The coat is fine and silky with soft corkscrew curls. It must be pure white. Because of he double coat, it tends to puff out rather than hang like other bichon varieties.

SIZE
It should be no higher than 30cm at the withers. Weight is not specified.

TEMPERAMENT
The Bichon Frise is forever a happy dog with a lively carefree approach to life. His ouncy stride and pleasant voice add to the appeal. He is a great family dog, being turdy, hardy and fun loving.

CARE AND GROOMING
Potential show exhibitors or pet owners who want the Bichon's coat to look its best hould beware - there is an enormous amount of work involved in grooming, bathing and cissoring. The coat needs daily brushing and regular bathing. But, on the positive side, the oat does not shed. Runny eyes can be a problem and need to be cleaned regularly.
