GROUP: Gundog    SIZE: Small/Medium    ORIGIN: USA

The American Cocker Spaniel is the most popular sporting dog in the US. He is the smallest of the Gundog breeds. His temperament and keenness to please make him an ideal companion, field and show dog. Above all, the breed should be merry.

ORIGIN
The American Cocker has its origin from the “spaniels” first mentioned in English literature in the fourteenth century. In his article, The Master of the Game, Edward, the second Duke of York, suggested that the ‘hounds for hawk spaniels’ came from Spain. Much was written about the spaniels’ ability to hunt, their merry disposition and their wagging tails when raising and starting fowl. Although we see great differences in the appearance of early spaniels to today’s Cockers, these key characteristics have carried through. The American Cocker Spaniel was recognised as a separate breed from the English Cocker in 1946.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The American Cocker’s sturdy compact body and cleanly chiselled and refined head create complete balance. He stands well up at the shoulder with a topline sloping slightly towards strong, moderately bent, muscular hindquarters. He moves with speed and endurance, yet is free, merry and sound.

The head is well proportioned with the rest of the dog. His expression is alert, soft and appealing with eyes that are round, full and dark brown. The skull is round but not exaggerated with clearly defined eyebrows and a pronounced stop. The muzzle is broad and deep with square jaws.

A key feature of the breed is the coat, which is well feathered and silky textured on the ears, chest, abdomen and legs. Colour and markings are variable and black, other solid colours and parti-coloured (two or more well broken colours, one of which is white) are accepted in the show ring. Tan points in all colours must be located in nominated positions.

SIZE
The ideal size for dogs is 15 inches, bitches 14 inches, or half an inch above or below these measurements. Size is most important and oversize is a disqualification in the show ring.

TEMPERAMENT
The American Cocker possesses a superb disposition and love of people. He is not timid or aggressive but has a confident attitude. Easily trained for work or show, he makes an ideal family dog.

CARE AND GROOMING
Regular clipping, bathing and brushing will keep his beautiful coat in good order. Trimming about the face and ears is essential, while stripping down the back is recommended to maintain the American’s distinctive style. As an active and intelligent dog, frequent exercise will enhance his well being and appearance.
