GROUP: Gundog SIZE: Small/Medium ORIGIN: United Kingdom
His ever wagging tail and merry nature has made the Cocker Spaniel one of the most popular gundog breeds both in Australia and the UK. The Cocker is a great hearted, highly intelligent dog with a determined attitude. He wears an active, yet thoughtful expression, and is an excellent companion and family dog.
ORIGIN
The spaniel family is one of the largest among dogs, dating back as a distinguishable group to the fourteenth century. At that time they were generally classified as Land Spaniels and Water Spaniels but were then evolved into specific types for slightly different purposes. In 1901 a writer referred to two types of Land Spaniels as “starters” and “cockers”. Starters were used to spring game in the sport of falconry, while cockers were developed to hunt the woodcock. It was well into the twentieth century before the Cocker Spaniel began to overtake the other spaniels and by the mid 1930s he was the most popular dog in Britain and gaining popularity worldwide, mainly as a show and companion dog.
GENERAL APPEARANCE
A compact and well balanced breed, the Cocker has a square muzzle with a distinct stop set midway between the top of his nose and occiput. His cheek bones are not prominent and his nose is wide enough for acute sensing power.
He has lobular ears, set low at eye level and fine leathers extending to his nose tip when pulled forward. The Cocker has a flat and silky textured coat, that is not too profuse and never curly or wiry. He has good feathering on ears, forelegs, body and hindlegs.
Originally the Cocker was mainly black with few golds. However, as it became more popular the blue and red mans, black and whites and red and whites were evolved. In solid colours no white is allowed except on the chest.
SIZE
A handy size, Cocker males stand up to 41 cm, bitches up to 39 cm and weigh between 28 and 32 lbs.
TEMPERAMENT
Cocker Spaniels are full of life and exuberant, yet gentle and affectionate. They are an adaptable breed, eager to join family activities. They thoroughly enjoy a free run.
Cockers are a delightful dog, easy to train and happiest when pleasing their owners. They love plenty of exercise and play, with their tails ever wagging.
CARE AND GROOMING
Regular brushing and checking of his long ears for grass seeds will keep a Cocker looking good. Bath as required.
