GROUP: Hound    SIZE: Large    ORIGIN: United Kingdom

The Foxhound — an extremely active breed — is ideally suited to “pack” life. He revels in the hunt and is a well balanced, powerful animal with a clean cut appearance. The Foxhound is medium sized and strongly built. A friendly breed, the Foxhound does not always adapt to suburban life and can become bored and destructive.

ORIGIN
The Foxhound has existed in England since the late seventeenth century. Believed to have descended from some of the hunting hounds taken to England during the Norman conquest, Foxhounds have been trained always to run in packs of 40 to 50 alongside mounted hunters.

The “hunt” soon became a fashionable social event, famous for colourful ceremonies and strict rules. Packs were developed in all parts of England and hounds were exported to Europe and the US. Foxes were brought to Australia so that British expatriates could continue their beloved traditions.

Unfortunately, the fox is now regarded as an exotic pest and causes widespread damage in country areas.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Foxhound has a well balanced, flat skull of medium length. His muzzle is long and square with large nostrils. Medium sized hazel or brown eyes help create his keen expression. He has strong jaws and a long, slightly arched neck.

Foxhounds are free striding and tireless with the ability to gallop. They have powerful and muscular hindquarters and well laid back shoulders. Their chest is deep with well sprung ribs and a broad and level back. Well padded feet are round, tight and strong. The tail is high set and carried gaily.

The Foxhound weatherproof coat is short and dense. Any recognised hound colour and markings are accepted in the show ring, such as black, tan and white or any combinations of these.

SIZE
The Foxhound stands between 58cm and 64cm.

TEMPERAMENT
A natural hunter, the Foxhound is not really suited to suburban living. Without the routine and discipline of pack life, Foxhounds can become noisy and destructive.

CARE AND GROOMING
No special grooming is necessary, but the breed is better in a country — rather than a metropolitan — location where it can run and exercise freely.
