GROUP: Hound    SIZE: Large    ORIGIN: United Kingdom

The Otterhound is a large, rough coated breed with a majestic head and strong body. Originally bred to work in water for long periods, the Otterhound also has the ability to gallop on land. The banning of otter hunting in 1978 left the breed without its original purpose, but it has found sanctuary as a show and family dog.

ORIGIN
With a history dating back to at least the thirteenth century, the Otterhound was bred to hunt otter from the time of King John of England in 1212. The Otterhound is believed to have been derived from a number of different breeds, including French Griffon hounds, Water Spaniels and the old English Southern Hound.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Otterhound has a strong body and free moving, long striding action — primarily built for a long day’s work in water. At a walk his gait is loose and shambling but he also has a sound active trot and a smooth and exceptionally long striding gallop.

His imposing head is clean cut with deep rather than wide cheekbones. His intelligent eyes are moderately deep set and his long, pendulous ears are a unique feature of the breed. Strong jaws and large well placed teeth are also distinctive of the Otterhound. He has a long, powerful neck, strongly boned forelegs and a well sprung, deep chest. His well muscled hindquarters are very strong.

The compact webbed feet are large, round and well knuckled and capable of spreading. His high set tail is carried up when alert or moving but never curls over the back. It may droop when he is standing.

His distinctive long coat measures four to eight cm in length and is harsh and waterproof. There is softer hair on the head and lower legs. Colours are whole coloured, grizzle, sandy, red, wheaten and blue. There can be white markings on the head, chest, feet and tail tip.

SIZE
Dogs stand about 67cm at shoulders, bitches 60cm.

TEMPERAMENT
Although the breed has retained its strong hunting instinct, the Otterhound is always amiable and even tempered. He has a distinctive, very loud and deep bell-like bay. Although they get on well with adults and children, they may not always be suited to city living because of their independent hunting spirit. Obedience training is recommended.

CARE AND GROOMING
Weekly brushing keeps the Otterhound’s shaggy coat in good order. It is a healthy, hardy breed and has a life span of about 12 years.
