GROUP: Hound    SIZE: Small/Medium    ORIGIN: France

One of four French hunting breeds, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a well balanced short legged compact hound. A happy and endearing personality makes him an excellent family dog.

ORIGIN
Literally translated as a small, short legged rough-coated dog from the Vendeen region of southern France, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is related to the Grand Griffon Vendeen, Briquet Griffon Vendeen and the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen. The Petit Basset breed dates back to the sixteenth century when it was bred down from a bigger Vendeen hound to follow hare by scent and be accompanied by huntsmen on foot. It has been claimed that the Petit Basset is a hairy version of the Basset Hound but this is incorrect as they are completely separate breeds.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a strong and active hound capable of a day’s hunting. He has a medium length oval shaped head that is not too wide. His large, dark eyes convey a friendly and intelligent expression.

The supple ears are narrow and fine, covered with long hair and fold inwards. The long and strong neck is set into well laid shoulders and carries the head proudly. Straight, thick and well boned torequarters, a deep chest and strong, muscular hindquarters are distinctive features of the breed. His medium length tail is well furnished with hair, set high and is strong at the base.

The rough coat is long and harsh, but without exaggeration. Colours are white with any combination of lemon, orange, tn-colour or grizzle markings.

SIZE
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen stands between 34 and 38cm.

TEMPERAMENT
A cheerful and independent extrovert, the Petit Basset is also willing to please. He thoroughly enjoys plenty of human companionship and space for exercise and play. His lively nature is accompanied by an almost jaunty facial expression. As with many other hunting hounds, he has a good resonant voice.

CARE AND GROOMING
The rough coat should be brushed and combed weekly. Obedience training is recommended.
