The Sealyham Terrier is a free moving active breed with a fearless and friendly nature. A short legged dog with a workman-like attitude, the Sealyham is independent and a long liver.
Like the Jack Russell Terrier, the Sealyharn was selectively bred by one man for his own needs. The squire of Sealyham in Pembrokeshire, Wales, Captain John Owen Edwardes, first bred together different terrier breeds to create a dog that would work with his pack of Otterhounds.
Captain Edwardes used broken-coated hunt terriers with West Highland Whites and Dandie Dinmonts in the mid 1800s to produce the Sealyham. The new breed was small enough to go to ground after badgers and brave enough to confront otters with the Otterhound.
The Sealyham is a sturdy breed with a general oblong outline. He has a slightly domed skull which is wide between the ears and a black nose.
His round eyes are dark and well set with dark pigmented eye rims. His medium sized ears are slightly rounded at the tip and carried at the sides of his cheeks.
The neck is fairly long, thick and muscular, while the forelegs are short, strong and straight as possible. His medium length body is level and flexible with well sprung ribs. The hindquarters are powerful for his size, while the thighs are deep and muscular.
The Sealyham tail is carried erect and usually docked. His coat is long, hard and wiry with a weather-resistant undercoat. Colours are all white or white with lemon, brown, blue or badger pied markings on the head and ears.
A friendly and companionable disposition helps make the Sealyham a good family dog. He is alert and fearless and has a reputation of sometimes being obstinate.
Care and Grooming
Obedience training for the Sealyham is recommended. His weather resistant double coat needs stripping twice a year and should be combed daily. Sealyharns are a sturdy and hardy breed.
