Major Health Problems in Dogs |
The following is a brief description of some of the illnesses and
ailments that can affect our canine friends. As their are over 500
inheritable problems alone, this is by no means a complete listing, but
at least it's a start! In most cases, early detection is the most
crucial thing, and this may largely depend on how well you know your
dog, his activity level, his normal, healthy appearance and normal
behaviour. This means that if Rover is an outside dog that you only
spend ten minutes a day with (apart from all the behavioural and
psychological problems that this may cause) you may not notice that he
is ill until it is too late to save him.

Conformation shows are an assessment of the physical characteristics of
individual dogs against the 'breed standard' for each breed. The breed
standard is a description of the ideal physical (and temperamental)
characteristics for individual breeds. The assessment is made by the
judge according to how he or she interprets the breed standard, so it
is important to remember that when you show your dog you are receiving
the opinion of that particular judge. Just because one particular judge
does not select a dog for Best of Breed does not mean that a different
judge would have the same opinion.

Before You Breed Your Dog |
There are many things that you need to consider before you breed your
dog. Possibly the first reason that you should consider is the reason
you want to breed - if this includes monetary gain, because you feel
that it will make your dog a better pet, you would like the kids to
experience the 'miracle of life' or you would like an extension of your
current dog, PLEASE THINK AGAIN! There are millions of unwanted dogs
already alive that require loving homes without bringing more into the
world.

Training The Dominant Dog |
|
Puppies are not born knowing that they shouldn't relieve themselves on
your champagne-colored carpeting. When nature calls, most will just
relieve themselves wherever they happen to be. If you do not want your
dog to use your home as his toilet, it becomes your job to teach him
just where you do want him to potty. House-training is very important,
not only for the obvious reason, but also because it is one of your
first opportunities to establish yourself as "ALPHA" in your
relationship with your dog.

Housetraining The Very Young Puppy (Under 16 weeks of age) |
Successful housetraining depends mostly on the humans involved in the
process. By using prevention instead of punishment, with vigilance,
reasonable expectations, and by using a puppy's natural instincts,
housetraining can be accomplished painlessly and in a reasonably short
time. Breed and/or sex have no impact on the ease or difficulty of
teaching your puppy to eliminate in a specific area (be it outdoors, on
newspapers, or in a kitty litter box.)
